Luxury London department store Harrods is replacing all its plastic carrier bags with fully recyclable paper bags from early next month. Staff will be given targets to reduce the number of bags they give out, and all bags from Harrods signature departments and food halls will be removed. Instead, staff will encourage customers to buy a jute bag reusable bag. It is futile to switch from one material or another, especially for a business that produces over 4 million bags per year.

“We are determined to overhaul the way bags are handed out across the store and are challenging customers to join us in reducing waste by using as few bags as possible. We are proud to see Harrods green bags being carried out of our store by customers. However, we hope to reduce the number of bags we see going forward.”
