Fred Segal, a Los Angeles-based retailer, and Black in Fashion Council announced Madelen Nyau, a Queens-based designer, as the winner in its Season Zero design contest. This competition is an initiative to support emerging Black designers.

Nyau, the winner of the second-annual Season Zero competition, will have her collection manufactured by Mastercard and sold at Fred Segal’s Flagship Sunset Blvd. Online and at the location.

Nyau will also be mentored by Fred Segal and Mastercard representatives. She will also receive a $10,000 grant from Mastercard and a Digital Doors Toolkit that will help her grow and improve digitally.

Ashley Petrie, Fred Segal’s senior vice president of merchandise, stated in a statement that the Season Zero contest is very important to them because it has shown a positive impact on the careers of young designers who are trying to break into the industry.

“The hardest part of selecting a winner was chosen from so many amazing submissions that showcased such talent and passion. Madelen’s collection blew us away. Her unique approach to design will resonate with Fred Segal customers.

Madelen Nyau wins the second Fred Segal Season Zero design competition

Season Zero received entries across the US from both established and emerging designers. All submissions were reviewed by the judges on the basis of creativity, execution, and vision.

Nyau, a Pratt Institute graduate, was awarded the Christopher Hunte On Point Award in 2021. Her brand, Titan Studios, impressed the judges. It focuses on luxury staples that are driven by curiosity in science, art, and psychology. The collection includes knit tops and denim pants as well as coats and coats. There are also wax and unwaxed canvas shorts and shorts.

Previous Season Zero winners include K.ngsley, Connor McKnight and House of Aama.

Madelen Nyau will have her debut collection available in-store at Fred Segal Sunset Blvd. From September 1, flagship will be available online at www.fredsegal.com.
